HOTARU 20000, which begins 2011 at the Pier Arts Centre, is the first installation of Takahiro’s work in response to the disaster.

Some 20,000 people died as a result of it, and he is making 20,000 HOTARU (firefly) pieces to represent their individual souls. The HOTARU glow in black light. The glow comes from uranium glass, and the surrounding clear glass represents the water that cools nuclear material used in the production of electricity.

Just as radiation is invisible, the glow trapped in the HOTARU is also normally invisible.
